Make a Difference Day is on October 28 and nonprofits and volunteers nationwide are getting ready for the nation’s biggest service day of the year. Make a Difference Day has been an annual event since 1992, and it only gets bigger and better every year. How can nonprofits and volunteers make a difference in Utah this year? Here are some ideas to inspire your organization and volunteers:
Start a Project. Did you know that you could get grant funding for your organization’s Make a Difference Day project? Funds are limited, but by registering your project, you could help spread awareness and attract new volunteers from your community through the Make a Difference Day platform. Projects can be anything that truly aspires to make a difference, including (but not limited to): homeless outreach, building/revamping infrastructure, fundraising through fun runs or donation drives, raising money and awareness for groups in your community who need it and much more.
Promote Volunteerism. What better way to make a long-lasting difference than by encouraging people to become regular volunteers with a nonprofit organization? You can promote Make a Difference Day on your website, in your nonprofit’s newsletters, through your social media channels, and by spreading the word with flyers, in-person outreach, and other forms of creative promotion in your community. Encourage a wide range of Utahns to volunteer as much as they’re willing and able to by demonstrating the awesome benefits of volunteerism and highlighting the impacts of regular volunteerism throughout Utah.
Keep Track of Your Progress. People are more likely to get involved if they know something good will come from their efforts. Rather than simply asking people to volunteer or donate money, resources, or services, consider ramping up your post-event promotion by taking plenty of pictures, interviewing volunteers (written or video testimonials), posting updates on your social media accounts throughout Make a Difference Day, and offering simple instructions for how folks can get involved. Include a simple message of, “Even if you weren’t able to make it out to Make a Difference Day this year, you can help us year-round by signing up to volunteer or donating today!” You also could provide an update on your organization’s progress (dollars raised and number of people benefiting from your services for example). Let the photos and figures speak for themselves and encourage people to join your organization’s dedication to the overall community during Make a Difference Day!
